Best Metal Detector – Overview

Many owners say they’d use nothing but a Garrett Pro Pointer for metal detecting because it does its job two to three times faster than metal detectors from other manufacturers. However, as a hobbyist, it’s important to know the general rules and regulations that apply to metal detector use. You don’t need a special license to own a metal detector.

A typical metal detector is a lightweight, handheld device with several parts that include a stabilizer, control box, shaft, and a search coil. TRUE DISCRIMINATION MODE – This metal detector can detect metals including iron, aluminum, gold, bronze, silver and their articles in all-metal mode. Garrett ACE 400 Metal Detector with 8.5″ x 11″ PROformance DD Waterproof Submersible Search Coil, Coil Cover, ClearSound Headphones, Garrett Pro-Pointer II Pinpointer, ACE Environmental Cover Up for control box, Adjustable Arm Strap, Batteries and a Two-Year Warranty.

With full batteries you can search around 27 hou,rs with the headphones and Remote Controlbox and about 20 hours with the search coil but this depends on the frequency you use. On the display of the XP DEUS you can read the soil mineralization value and the actual value of the soil mineralization, the digital and analog conductivity value of the detected target, the selected search program, battery live from the control unit / remote control and from the search disk, and the set frequency. The Garrett AT Gold has a lot of setting options, which are easy to approach and therefore the detector is suitable for both novice and experienced searchers. The detector has a manually or automatically adjustab,le ground balance and pinpoint mode. The search frequency is the biggest difference compared to the Pro, the AT Gold searches with a frequency of 18KHz, whereas the AT PRO is only 15KHz, this higher frequency makes the AT Gold more sensitive to smaller nuggets and targets.

This means you only need to cover the ground once, allowing you to find more treasure. This process also significantly reduces false signals from ground minerals, even in harsh and variable conditions, such as salt water beaches. Weak target signals are amplified inside the coil, before the receive signal is sent up the coil cable where interference and signal loss can occur. This also results in enhanced Target ID accuracy and greater immunity to both ground and environmental noise. The coil microcontroller communicates the coil’s configuration, size and exact frequency, so the control box can generate a perfectly matched transmit signal.

Whatever you decide on, make sure you read up on metal detector reviews like this one so you can get a better sense of what is best for you. Beginners can definitely use a metal detector app, but none of these types hold a candle to the cheapest Minelab metal detector. Metal detecting is one of those hobbies that many people are really passionate about.

And if you need to filter it even more, there are eight metal categories. Four elimination modes keeps you on target when looking for specific pieces. You’ll find that Geo-x is helpful with keeping tabs on areas that are rich with metal objects. It’s also waterproof up to ten feet, has three sensitivity modes for varying depths, a quick re-tune capability, and manual sensitivity for mineralized grounds. It’s due to the bright orange color which looks a bit over the top, but when you’re hunting on your knees in a muddy field, river creek or windy beach it only takes a few seconds to lose sight of your pinpointer. Whilst those machines can and do pick up gold, they aren’t as sensitive as a high-frequency machine, and you risk leaving that elusive nugget behind for someone else. This is a higher frequency than standard metal detectors that are looking for all metals.

With standard metal detectors, there’s always a trade-off between sensitivity and depth. As you would expect from a gold detector, the GMT has both manual and automatic ground balance modes. The AT Gold is an entry-level gold detector, but it isn’t as straightforward to use as the Gold Bug Pro. The AT Pro also has a number of advanced features, including Garrett’s “Pro” audio mode, iron audio, manual ground balance and digital target ID.

If you are looking for a budget metal detector outside of the Bounty Hunter name brand, this one will treat you well. The New Home Innovations – Starter Kit metal detector was a bit low on the overall score for our tests, but the cheap price tag on this unit does offset that a bit. It is also noteworthy that this metal detector came with high quality headphones to plug into the jack. The options on the LCD screen include a sensitivity meter, discrimination meter, notch adjuster and metal adjuster. Though it excelled on our tests, this metal detector is actually the second cheapest model that we tested.
